Girls top Mounties
Coach Jeff Jacksits said earlier this year, "when our shots drop we can beat anybody."
And that's exactly what happened Tuesday night when his Konkrete Kids routed Stroudsburg 52-25 in a District 11 playoff opener.
His Kids hit on 11 field goals in the first period and three more in the second period as Northampton took a 34-11 halftime lead and coasted into District 11's next round, Friday night.
With all-Lehigh valley Conference first teamer Leandra Sterner and senior Ashley Brink leading the way, Northampton made it look easy as they lambasted a team they beat by only four points (34-30) on Feb. 4. Sterner, who entered the game with 276 points, added 18 and Brink contributed 15 points. Neither played in the fourth period after Kids took a 48-15 lead.
Autumn Klucsarits added seven points and Kayla Csencsits five with Zeniyah Sanders pulling down seven rebounds.
"It was a team effort," said Jacksits. "We're still learning to play together as a team and the girls are very loose. It's playoff time and you've got to play your best all of the time."
Northampton, which faces Mountain Valley Conference champion Pocono Mountain West (and the District 11 4A top seed) Friday at Pleasant Valley, lost to the Panthers 59-41 in the regular season.
"But," Jacksits said, "it'll be different this time. We've got to defend the perimeter and can't turn the ball over."
Tuesday night the Kids did that as they jumped to a 7-0 lead, and, after Stroudsburg's first basket, the Kids ran off another 14-straight points and led 23-4 after eight minutes. Then as the second period started with a three-pointer by the Mountaineers Micaela Rudas, the Kids ran off another streak of 11-straight by holding Stroudsburg scoreless for nearly five minutes.
Northampton has a tough job Friday when they face PMW's high-scoring trio of sisters Ramonia and Jackie Benitez and Stephanie Davis. But, Jacksits thinks his team will be ready.
"It'll be a little different this time," Jacksits said.
