Girls get win over DHS
It was a roller-coaster week for the Konkrete Kids girls' basketball team.
After beating Dieruff 54-46 for their second straight Lehigh Valley Conference win, Northampton ran into a buzz saw in the form of preseason LVC favorite Bethlehem Catholic with the Golden Hawks racking up a 63-36 decision.
But, Coach Jeff Jacksits' Kids bounced back with a Saturday matinee victory over visiting Holy Redeemer 49-44 in a nonleague clash.
Northampton's record starts at 2-4 in the LVC and 4-8 overall which translates into the Kids needing five more LVC or eight more overall wins to qualify for the District 11 playoffs for a seventh straight season.
Senior Ashley Brink and junior letter winner Leandra Sterner set the pace against Dieruff with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Then against Becahi a poor shooting start (1-for-9 from the court in the first quarter) spelled doom for the Kids as Becahi ran its record to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the LVC.
"We knew it would be hard. They (Becahi) are big and fast and talented," said Jacksits.
In fact, Becahi had three girls in double figures (Janelle Robinson, Cecelia Perez and Kalista Walters), while Northampton was led by Brink's 10 points and Sterner's eight.
But the Kids reversed the role against District 2 titan Holy Redeemer by finishing strong. Sterner had 21 points and senior Michele Dally had nine as the Kids put the game away from the foul line.
Holy Redeemer's Alexis Lewis had a chance to force an overtime when, with Northampton leading, 46-44. Lewis' final second shot missed and Sterner was fouled in the rebound.
Sterner made the first of one-and-one, but missed the second as the game ended - but hold on. Holy Redeemer's bench was charged with two technical fouls and Sterner and Dally each sank one shot for final 49-44 score.
Northampton plays three games again this week. The Kids visited Freedom Tuesday, after Press deadlines, then entertain Central Catholic on Friday before traveling Saturday to Pocono Mountain West for a nonleague game.
