Girls 0-2, but show competitiveness

Northampton's girls basketball didn't get any wins during the opening weekend of the season, but they did get a lot of respect.

With only one starter back from last year's 19-5 team, the Konkrete Kids were expected to be competitive - and they were just that.

The Kids lost to Pleasant Valley 47-45 at the buzzer in their opener, then dropped a 39-38 decision to Central Catholic in a Yasso-Rothrock Classic contest.

Northampton, coached by Jeff Jacksits, showed that the Kids possibly could have won both games and that's "a positive" for a team that is rebuilding.

In the opener at Pleasant Valley's "Bear Den," the Kids fell behind early 15-7, but roared back for a 24-22 halftime lead and traded baskets for most of the second half until Keri Dekmar's shot at the buzzer proved to be the winner for the Bears.

Junior Leandra Sterner and senior Ashley Brink set the pace for Northampton with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Jordan Meekes and Courtney Miller had 10 each for the winning Mountain Valley Conference team while Dekmar finished with nine.

Then in Saturday afternoon's Yasso-Rothrock clash at Liberty, it was close throughout with Sterner scoring a game-high 22 points for the Kids and junior Amber Farnholtz holding her own on the boards as Brink was sidelined after suffering a head injury in the Pleasant Valley game.

The Vikettes, defending Lehigh Valley Conference champions, won the game on an Alyssa Mack shot with 20 seconds remaining. Mack was CCHS' top scorer with 11 points and Olivia Rosemen added 10.

The Kids open LVC action this week with their first home game on Friday against Whitehall. The they visit North Division favorite Parkland on Tuesday and return home next Friday for an LVC game against Nazareth. They close out next week with a Saturday afternoon nonleague game at East Stroudsburg South.
