EMMAUS HIGH SCHOOL Theater department offers 'Macbeth' Nov. 8, 9 and 10

A cast of 35 Emmaus High School students will perform William Shakespeare's tragedy, "Macbeth" 7 p.m. Nov. 8, 9 and 10 in the high school auditorium.

Macbeth, a tragedy written by William Shakespear opens when Macbeth and Banquo, Scottish generals are returning home to King Duncan in Scotland after defeating a rebel army, assisted by Norwegian troops. While on their way Macbeth and Banquo come upon three witches who know them and predict their futures.

The first witch declares Macbeth will be thane of Glamis, the second he will be thane of Cawdor and the third claims Macbeth will be King. Macbeth is startled by this but knows he could never be King as long as the king's sons are alive.

The witches then tell Banquo he will be greater and happier than Macbeth, and he will never reign as king but his sons will be Kings in Scotland. The witches then disappear.

The story continues involving the predictions of the three witches.

The first witch, played by Laura Erle, the second witch by Allie Fonesca and the third witch is played by Logan Beck.

During an interview during dress rehearsal, the three girls said they felt playing the roles of witches in the play was fun and challenging, but they found playing a supernatural role to be difficult and iconic. Although they were out of their comfort zone, they pushed themselves to be as creepy as possible.

Erle and Fonesca are pursuing careers in acting. Erle will major in musical theater and Fonesca will minor in theater in college. Beck plans to major in journalism and is the current EHS correspondent for the East Penn Press.

Christian Urrutia plays Macbeth, a general who becomes a king. He plans to study economics and international relations in college, but would consider acting in community theater or regional theater after college.

"It's really fun. It has been a crazy experience, just with all the text and the language. I think it's definitely paid off," Urrutia said.

Chrissy Cilento, playing Lady Macbeth, has a passion for acting and finds it to be a great experience.

"I always thought I wanted to be an actress, up until this year. This year I decided it was not the career for me but I definitely want to pursue it. It's still my passion and it's always going to be. I definitely want to consider it when I'm older. I'm so excited about playing Lady Macbeth; I love to be evil and really get into the character. I'm so excited for everyone to see the final results," Cilento said.

Jason Mountain plays Banquo, a general who fought in the same war with Macbeth. Mountain enjoys Shakespeare's works. "I really love it because I have always been a fan of Shakespeare. I especially like that we are modernizing the play. People really should come to see this because the play not only looks good but it's also in Shakespeare's original text," Mountain said.

Mountain plans to study psychology to get his PhD.

David Gaddy, a well-seasoned actor before transferring to EHS, plays Macduf, conqueror of Macbeth. He loves acting.

"It's my first part at Emmaus and I'm really honored to work with such a talented cast. This is my first time doing Shakespeare and I absolutely love it. This is his 21st show. Gaddy's plans for college are studying communications and Spanish.
