The topic of the September meeting of the Claussville Garden Club was "Math For Flower Arrangers."

Susan Campanelli, a previous garden club speaker, always presents an interesting discussion.

She brought along flowers from her own garden and club members brought flowers and flower holders to work on for their own take-home arrangements.

Campanelli said when arranging flowers, first measure the vase or flower holder and then measure the flowers so they are at least one-and-a-half to two times the height of the container.

For a 6-inch tall vase, the height of the flowers should be nine to 12 inches above the lip of the vase.

When cutting the flowers, make sure to add the height of the vase.

If the container is wider than it is tall, then measure the width and the flowers would have to be one-and-a-half to two times the width of the container.

The process went smoothly when everyone was working with their flowers.

Campanelli gave other tips along the way as she walked among the members to give personal advice.

Everyone went home with one or two lovely plant arrangements.

The club's business meeting followed the program and was brought to order by President Julie Fenstermaker.

Chaplain Mary Ann Hrabovsky read an appropriate poem and blessing.

Carol Reinert, horticulture chairman, gave some information about ridding the garden of pests, especially slugs.

She said now was the time to divide perennials.

Rose Kite announced 16 members were present at the meeting.

Several of them said they saw bears. One was seen crossing Kunkles Mill Road. The other saw a brown bear with cubs close to Stump Lane.

When the meeting ended, the hospitality committee for the evening, Barbara Blatt, Karin Lilly, and Rose Kite served refreshments.
