Football falls to Emmaus
During last week's contest against Emmaus (4-2 overall; 3-2 in LVC), Northampton's (2-4 overall; 1-4 in LVC) opening possession of the second half figured to have a large effect on the game's final outcome.
The Konkrete Kids capped off a 12-play drive at the end of the second quarter to pull Northampton to within two touchdowns at halftime. And as the Konkrete Kids were set to receive the second half kickoff, the mentality was to build on that momentum and cut the Hornets' deficit a bit more.
But combined with a few costly penalties and miscues, the Hornet offense proved to be too much for the Konkrete Kids in the 35-14 defeat on Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium.
"I think to get back into rhythm for the offense it touched things off as far as, when things go bad they really kind of snowball," said head coach Jeff Brosky. "And I thought our kids put forth a great effort despite that. But some of those things you just can't overcome."
After a seven-play drive resulted in a punt for the Konkrete Kids, it was the Hornets who would respond moments later. A 30-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Kerson to wideout Kyzir White made it 27-7 after a missed extra point with 6:22 to play in the third quarter.
"That was hard to overcome, for our kids especially," said Brosky. "Once you get that momentum going, for us it's difficult to overcome."
The Konkrete Kids' next possession was much of the same. A 36-yard pass from quarterback Nick Cook to wide receiver Dylan Cook put the Konkrete Kids in Emmaus territory in the midst of a promising drive. However, the Hornets got to Cook three players later and dropped him for an eight-yard loss. Northampton then turned the ball over on downs on the next play as Cook's pass to wideout Ray Ramos was short of the first down mark.
"[The offense was] a little bit under our expectations," said Brosky. "But I thought we established the run game a little bit which we tried to do tonight."
Running back Blake Boehm got the Konkrete Kids back to within two touchdowns after a four-yard TD run around the left corner with 7:28 to play. But it was a little too late.
And the Hornets once again had an answer on the other side.
Running back Wyllim Miller took the Hornets' next offensive play 63 yards for his second touchdown of the game, giving Emmaus a 35-14 lead with 7:11 remaining.
"We've seen them run the football fairly well," said Brosky. "We knew they had some decent backs in the backfield. We've been bruised up a little bit as far as stopping the run. And that was a concern coming in."
"And then when they have a 50-yard run for a score, that's kind of tough to overcome," said Brosky. "They just had a little bit more speed I think than we were able to handle."
The Hornets scored on their first three possessions of the game to make it 21-0 at the 7:50 mark of the second quarter. Miller first scampered 67 yards for the score just 2:03 into the game, which was followed up by two touchdown passes from Kerson to wideout Jacob Maehrer.
While Cook - who passed for 150 yards and rushed for 57 more -steadily became more comfortable running the offense, the running game struggled a bit. Besides Cook, the Konkrete Kids combined to rush for 27 yards, and they'll look to continue to emphasize that moving forward.
"Just continue to establish our run game," said Brosky. "And just work on the passing. Some teams are looking to take things away from us. So we just have to strategize and make sure we take care of those things."
The Konkrete Kids will next host undefeated and LVC-leading Easton (6-0 overall; 5-0 in LVC) on Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Northampton High School.
