Coplay Borough hosted a recent meeting with representatives from Whitehall Township and the Whitehall-Coplay School District.

Representatives sat down in council chambers to discuss a wide range of topics, from the opening of the 2012-13 school year to the status of commercial development.

The atmosphere was cordial as each entity provided an update of what is happening. The sharing of ideas and information was done in the spirit of cooperation, an attempt to avoid problems later.

Coplay was represented by council members Joseph Groller and David Royer. Whitehall's representative was Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. Delegates from the Whitehall-Coplay School District included Superintendent John W. Corby and school board members Joyce Wheeler and Owen Eberhart.

Groller said security cameras were installed at the parkway pool and an older utility truck was given to the borough by the Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority. He also reported on a very successful Community Days festival, a new contract for public works personnel and additional funding for the Coplay Public Library.

Corby said the opening of the new school year went well.

He touched on an incident involving a kindergarten student struck by a private vehicle at a school bus stop. Several people witnessed the accident and police are currently investigating the incident.

Reports indicate the driver of the vehicle allegedly failed to stop for the school bus. The child is now back in school.

A program entitled "Communities That Care" that Whitehall and Salisbury townships is forming was outlined. The sponsor of the program is The Center for Humanistic Change Inc.

Hozza reported on the tentative schedule for traffic improvement construction to be completion. Under way are two large projects, one at the ramps at MacArthur Road and Route 22 and the other involving Route 145 closer to the municipal building.

The mayor said business privilege tax litigation is ongoing with Allentown Power Center, the landlord for the former Blockbuster and Staples stores.

Touching on commercial development, Hozza said Super Walmart will open in October, but no date has been announced. Obeda, located next to Panera, will open tomorrow. Golden Corral, which is under construction, may not open until after the holidays.
