LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Northampton field hockey team off to hot start

Last week it was a mixture of defense and offense that paid off for Northampton's field hockey team.

This week, it was another mixture of defense and offense - with more emphasis on defense as the Konkrete Kids racked up a pair of overtime victories.

Coach Kelly Backenstoe's squad registered 2-1 wins over Whitehall and Parkland as the Konkrete Kids opened Lehigh Valley Conference play with wins over key North Division foes.

The wins boosted Northampton's record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the LVC as the Kids move into their LVC schedule "big time" this week with a home game against Nazareth last night followed by visiting Dieruff tomorrow before entertaining Bethlehem Catholic next Tuesday.

In both road-game wins last week the Kids came from behind with goalie Mikayla Ninos making 11 saves against Whitehall and eight more against Parkland to give her 30 saves in four games.

Northampton's defense, led by co-captain Tori Gollie, Bri Bankos and Bri Dalton, allowed only one goal scored in each game.

Against Whitehall, the Zephyrs Molly Graveno scored in the first half for a 1-0 lead. Erin Tiwold's second-half goal tied it for the Kids and Emily Nonnemacher, who assisted on Tiwold's goal, scored the game-winner with only 15 seconds left in the overtime period.

Then at Parkland on Monday, Brooke Benedict scored for the Trojans on an assist from Sammie Szewczak before Nonnemacher knotted it on an assist from Megan Tiwold.

Nonnemacher scored the game-winner in overtime on another Megan Tiwold assist and Nonnemacher now has six goals and four assists in four games. Megan Tiwold has two goals and four assists with Kate Fehnel adding two goals. Autumn Klucsarits and Erin Tiwold each have one goal. Fehnel, Megan Weist and Jackie Miller each have one assist.
