The family of Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Sarah Furbur came out in full force at Lehigh Valley International Airport Saturday night to welcome home a hero.
Furbur, a 2009 Parkland High School graduate, was a motor transport specialist, driving some of the Marine Corps larger trucks during her deployment in Afghanistan.
On July 10, she was injured when an IED, an improvised explosive device, exploded.
Hospitalized for two weeks, Furbur was awarded the Purple Heart.
Among those gathering Sept. 9 for a party at the Trexlertown home of her mother and stepfather, Julie and Mike Malloy, were Furbur's father and stepmother, Pete and Sharon Furbur; and stepbrother Tommy Malloy.
Furbur said she wasn't sure what she wants to do after completing her tour of duty with the Marine Corps, but plans on taking advantage of the educational opportunities offered.
Following recuperation at home, she will be returning to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, San Diego, Calif., to serve her remaining duty.
