Upper Macungie Supervisor Kathy Rader has announced adult volleyball will be offered Tuesday nights now through Feb. 26, 2013, in the Fogelsville Elementary School gym.

All ability levels are welcome and no pre-registration is required.

The 5K Fun Run/Walk for Parks will take place Oct. 7 at Lone Lane Park. The run/walk will be from Lone Lane Park to Grange Park and back.

All proceeds will go to the parks and recreation fund.

Rader also said at the supervisors' Sept. 6 meeting the recreation board needs more volunteers. If anyone is interested, call the township office.

Highgate Phase III preliminary/final submission brought the most attention when the planning commission report was given.

William Sabol, a neighbor to the development, wanted to know why he wasn't notified of this plan and why the plan was changed from the original.

He asked why wetlands were being destroyed, when in the prior plan they were not scheduled for development.

The board explained the area along Twin Ponds Road will not be changed, the development is to the rear of these lots.

He was also told the wetlands are being removed and replaced in another location.

After several minutes of discussion, supervisors approved the plan.

Police Chief Edgardo Colon reported the changeover to the new police department is proceeding as planned.

To date, 26 applications have been received from candidates for police officer.

To outfit the officers, Colon asked for a budget item not to exceed $143,000 for the equipment, including uniforms, Tasers, raincoats, body armor and anything else required.

This amount, Colon stated, should be enough to outfit 30 officers.

The police department recently moved into the top floor of the new building.

A meeting to consider and to possibly adopt an ordinance establishing a police pension plan was set for 4 p.m. Sept. 14.

Supervisor Sam Ashmar and Colon met with Maxatawny Township representatives recently and will have another meeting Sept. 17.

Fire Commissioner Grant Grim gave the monthly report of calls for the fire companies and the EMS.

A total of 103 responses occurred in August for the fire stations and EMS responses were 210.

Grim announced a drill will be held Sept. 28 at Country Meadows to test emergency preparedness response.

Attorney Lawrence Fox, representing Minu Desai, approached the board concerning Iron Run Hotel.

His client wants to raze the hotel and motel and construct a new motel. This would need a zoning change.

"Why should we change zoning so you can make more money?" Ashmar asked. "You can build something there that meets the code."

Rader chimed in calling it spot zoning if the board were to change zoning to suit his client.

Fox suggested an "inverse condemnation" but the board was not in favor of this.

"There are other uses of the property available in the ordinance," Ashmar said.

The board tabled this matter until the Oct. 4 meeting so Fox and his client can present more information.

One of the most anticipated items on the agenda was the designation of Trick or Treat Night.

After some discussion, the board agreed to hold the event 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Rader mentioned a concern with errant truck traffic on Wood Lane and Oldt Road.

Tractor trailers are using this way occasionally and this is causing the road to deteriorate.

Weiss Road and Arrowhead Lane are also being used but to a lesser degree. A traffic study is expected to be conducted.

When the end of the meeting rolled around, public comment was heard.

Larry Wink told the board about problems with the recreation area in Breinigsville Park.

He said the ball field needs repair; there is a water leak at the refreshment stand and the grass needs to be mowed.

A member of the recreation board will meet with Wink to check the situation.
