St. John's United Church of Christ, 1415 Rising Sun Road, Laurys Station, is offering a chicken barbecue 4-6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 for eat-in and from 4-7 p.m. for take-out.

The meal includes a half-chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, lettuce with bacon dressing, beverage and homemade dessert.

There is also the option of a kid's meal containing two drumsticks, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, cookie and drink.

St. John's UCC will celebrate Rally Day Sept. 9 with Sunday School classes starting 9 a.m. Worship begins at 10:15 a.m.

Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, will inaugurate a women's Bible study program, "Brown Bag Bible Blessings," noon Sept. 8.

The first session has the theme "Our Present Christ's Presence." Each class will last about an hour.

Bring a lunch. Beverages will be supplied.

The Bible study will continue from October through May 2013, on the first Saturday of each month.

The Upper Lehigh Lions Club will have its food stand set up at Parkland High School home football games at 7 p.m.

The first time will be Sept. 7 when Parkland plays Easton. The second will be Sept. 21 when Liberty High School is the visiting team.

Trojans may catch a glimpse of former principal Harrison Bailey, who recently began a new position at Liberty.

Looking back in Lions Club history, the first and longest running food service fundraiser project was at the Allentown Fair.

At first, a wooden structure was used, along with a tent shared with Roger Yorgey's Farm and Home Supply business.

For most of the years, the Upper Lehigh Lions had a favorable location for their stand and had many return customers who flocked to it each year.

When I was a child, my parents took turns working in the refreshment stand. I remember seeing big kettles full of turkey barbecue cooking on the stove.

We had time off from school during fair week while teachers attended what was known as county institute.

For some time, the Upper Lehigh Club was the only vendor serving breakast at the fair and was greatly appreciated by fair grounds workers.

Although the Upper Lehigh Lions Club no longer sets up at the Allentown Fair, other summer events provide opportunities for fundraising.

The club did well at the Schnecksville Fair and the Lions Festival and Craft show at Neffs grove.

Even though there was rain both evenings for the festival, Lions President Larry Penrose reports, "We fed a lot of people before the rain."

The Lions breakfast committee is already preparing for its new season serving at the Schnecksville Fire Hall.
