The third annual luau at Alburtis pool was a joint effort of Alburtis Police Department and Alburtis Area Community Center recently.
The weather was hot and the Hawaiian music playing seemed to authenticate the occasion for some attendees.
"This is awesome! Just like Hawaii," David Walker, of Macungie, said while eating a free pulled pork sandwich under the shade of a tree.
Many games were played with prizes for the winners. There was a pineapple eating contest, a clothes relay and family swim relay. They played coin toss, soda toss, water balloon toss and juice box toss for the little ones according to Pool Manager Karen Semet.
"I really enjoy doing this for the community. I want to thank everybody that came and helped with the event. Every year it's getting larger," Officer Chris Lubenetski, who organizes this event each year, said.
Lubenetski especially appreciated the help of the kids who helped to serve. Aaron Jacob Seibert and his brother Erik, Meredith Schuler and Elizabeth Tepes were volunteers for the event.
"I'm very proud of our organization and the response we get from the borough," Mayor Robert Mader said.
J.P. Mascaro & Sons, who paid for the pig, and Giant Food Stores, who donated buns, soda and sauce, sponsored the luau.
Dean Lotte, with the help of his wife Barb, started roasting the pig at 6 a.m. and pulled pork sandwiches were given out after 3 p.m.
Lubenetski invited everyone to visit the police department's Facebook page to attend future events at the pool.
