LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

After big win, WHS looks to keep rolling

Whitehall kicker Nick Miley never thought twice.

Miley booted a 25-yard field goal on the game’s final play that lifted the Zephyrs to a 45-42 win over Parkland, snapping the Trojans eight-game winning streak last week.

However, it wasn’t Miley’s first late-game heroic.

“The field goal was in my comfortable range so I did not have doubts,” said Miley. “I started kicking in the beginning of my sophomore year and played JV.

“This is the biggest kick in my career. However, the emotions were similar to the Emmaus extra point to win the game in Week 7.”

It was the sixth straight victory for the Zephyrs (8-1), and they can win the East Penn Conference Lehigh Division with a victory.

Their latest victory was another example of a team that has a strong bond and a straight focus. Whitehall was down 35-21 at halftime, and they later had to battle back from a 21-point deficit.

“The players believe and trust one another,” said head coach Andy Marino. “They don’t let the score affect their performance and don’t ride the momentum waves.

“Our players played their best when their best was required. I’m proud of all of them.”

Quarterback Tanner Dogmanits had another banner game, as he threw for 327 yards with three touchdowns, and he also ran for 117 yards and scored twice. Running back Jeziah Gregory accounted for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Henry Schultz caught seven passes for 112 yards with a score.

Dogmanits saw a total team effort.

“Our offense played well from the line blocking and the wide receivers and running back making plays,” said Dogmanits. “We trust in each other and keep playing hard for four quarters.”

Wide receiver CJ Lowe, who caught a 57-yard touchdown pass among his two catches for 97 yards, sees a cemented bond among his teammates.

“We keep winning because we play together as a team and we all have great chemistry,” said Lowe. “We all want the same thing. We never let our record get to our head. Being 8-1 means that every team is going to give us their best effort, so we have to come and play with the same effort and mindset all four quarters.”

Marino knows his team has to stay on track against Central Catholic (6-3), coming off a 49-6 win over Dieruff.

“They are a very experienced team with great talent,” said Marino. “They have won a lot of close games this year. It will only get harder from here, and we look forward to a good week of practice.”

ZEPHYR ZONES: Whitehall won last year’s battle, 49-14, and in 2024, they recorded a 35-0 shutout. Central Catholic’s last win was in 2023 by a 30-14 score. Dogmanits has completed 128 of 170 attempts for 1,839 yards with 15 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has rushed for 628 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Gregory has 1,071 yards with 16 touchdowns. Henry Schultz has 52 catches for 895 yards with nine touchdowns. Miley has converted four of seven field goal attempts, and has converted 34 of 37 extra points. Defensively, Aiden Hannis leads the team with 60 tackles, Iskander Blanco has 51, and Ben Pychinka has 42. Nic Calcano has four interceptions, and Rocco Fonzone has three ... Central Catholic has won five of their last six. Caleb Oswald has started the last few games for the Vikings at quarterback, and he has shared time with Janiel Pena. Trey Torres-Johnson had rushed for 765 yards with six touchdowns through eight games. Harry Restino has 53 tackles.

PREDICTION (My season record 7-2): Like most prognosticators, I thought Parkland would beat Whitehall last week. The Zephyrs proved just about everyone wrong, and they are rolling. Their offense is playing at a high level, and the defense piecing it together. The only issue here is whether the Zephyrs would have a letdown, but that hasn’t happened all season. Whitehall is seeded second in the District 11 Class 6A bracket, behind Nazareth, which gave them their lone loss. Senior night and their final regular-season home game should be a quick night. With basketball season on the horizon, boys’ basketball coach Jeff Jones can pick me up a SMP Mini-Mart cheesesteak with onions, wiz, and hot peppers, please ... ZEPHYRS, 45-13.
