Special to The Press
Northampton Community College Theatre Department opened its fall season with a musical based on a hit movie.
“Mean Girls” ran Oct. 22 to Oct. 25, Lipkin Theatre, Northampton Community College Bethlehem Township campus.
“Mean Girls” is based on the 2004 hit film comedy written by Tina Fey, an Upper Darby Township, Delaware County, native.
The screenplay was inspired by Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book “Queen Bees and Wannabes.”
The movie starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron and is the feature film debut of Allentown native Amanda Seyfried, who played Karen Smith, one of the high school group of girls known as The Plastics.
The film was adapted into a rock musical with music by Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, and premiered on Broadway in 2018. The show was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including best musical.
Cady Heron (Audrey Wood) is a naïve teenage girl who transfers to suburban Chicago North Shore High School after years of homeschooling in Africa.
Cady discovers she must navigate the school’s social hierarchy, where popularity is power, rules are everything, and one wrong move can make you a target.
Cady befriends the unpopular Damian (Gio Failla) and Janis (Maddie Bonilla) and learns the school is run by queen bee Regina George (Josayra Martinez) and her clique The Plastics (Jameelah Gonzalez and Abigail Murphy).
Cady and her friends decide to devise a “revenge party” to end Regina’s reign, but learn the hard way that you can’t cross a queen bee without getting stung.
The cast includes Karen Castillo, Ryan Prince, Alyson Krawchuk-Boschen, Nick Lópes, Zeke Valenzuela, Maria Gambino, Emily Grove, Karah Abarca, Willow Pritchett, Mar Sotomayor, Nevaeh Gonzalez, Diamani Dawson, Mickey Morales, Hannah Zarate, Morrison Barks, Daniel Teles, Auqinay Jones, Mia Ferreira, Jack Binder, Katelynn Gaudreau, Rebecca Docteroff, Brendan Hamadyk, Benito Ortiz, Jacob Piccini, Nathan Sample, Jowell Martinez, Moiz Saif, Tyler Alonge, Nathan Montalvo, Declan Messics, Trey Murphy and Ernest Williams.
