SHS closes in on playoff berths

Last week was a strange week for the Salisbury boys soccer team.

It started normal enough with a 3-1 win against Wilson before things went off the rails a little against Notre Dame of Green Pond and Bangor.

Daniel Galindo and Brian Soita handled the offense against the Warriors with Galindo netting two of the goals and Soita getting the other. Thomas Pojanowski added two assists and Soren Ruiz added one for Salisbury to get the win.

Things got a little dark in a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame when the lights at the stadium weren’t working and referees notified both teams that they might cut the game short if they ruled that it was too dark to continue. That threw a bit of a monkey wrench into the game.

The game was scoreless at the half, but some adjustments led Salisbury to begin dominating play in the second half until the Crusaders found a way to get a goal.

“We struggled after giving up that goal and when the refs said they may be ending the game early because of darkness, we started to chase a bit,” said Falcons head coach Jonathan Ruiz.

As it turned out, the whole game was played, but there is no denying that the loss of lights changed the strategies a little.

Things weren’t exactly easy for the Falcons in a 2-1 win against Bangor.

With the game scoreless, the Slaters got a goal with just :03 left in the first half.

With 10:00 left in regulation, Salisbury tied the game on a goal by Pojanowski. Just as everybody was thinking about overtime, the Falcons got a goal from Jeandy Lantigua Batista with just :40 remaining to lock up the win.

“While I think overall we are a better team than Bangor,” said Jonathan Ruiz. “We struggled to score in the first half and then battled back in the last 20 minutes to bring the game back.”

After this week, Salisbury (6-4-1 overall; 5-2-1 Colonial League) will have just three regular season in 2026. The schedule has them facing Palmerton (3-9-0, 2-7-0), Pen Argyl (7-2-3, 3-2-2), and Northwestern Lehigh (10-0-0, 7-0-0) this week.

The Falcons are fighting to earn a spot in the district playoffs and are in a three-way tie with Northern Lehigh and Wilson for fourth place in the overall Colonial League standings. Salisbury holds the tiebreaker over Northern Lehigh thanks to a win over the Bulldogs in the first game of the season. Wilson and Salisbury have split their two games.

Northwestern Lehigh and Moravian Academy are the only unbeaten teams in the league. Eight other teams that have a shot at filling one of the six remaining playoff spots.

Just one game separates third place Notre Dame and tenth place Bangor in the standings.
