Santana wins D-11 title

Zoe Santana entered the District 11 as the top seed and rolled to the title with wins in four straight matches.

The Hornet sophomore didn’t surrender more than two games in any set during the tournament.

Santana beat unseeded Maddie Reeder (Stroudsburg) 6-0, 6-0 in the first round then faced all three of Parkland’s starting singles players over the next three rounds.

She took down Parkland’s Kiana Miles 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round before a 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 5 seed Sonia Lee (Parkland) in the second round.

Second-seeded Sadie Pollard (Parkland) awaited Santana in the title match. Santana had beaten the Trojans’ top singles player a week earlier in the East Penn Conference tournament.

At districts, Santana took out Pollard, who is also a sophomore, 6-2, 6-0 for the title.

Santana will advance to the state singles championship later this month.

Pollard finished as district runner-up for the second consecutive season.

Emmaus senior Brooke DiGiacomo also played in the district singles tournament last week. DiGiacomo was unseeded and knocked off No. 7 seed Corinne Mumma (Liberty) 6-1, 6-0, in the first round before falling to Pollard 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Hornet senior Gabby Tranguch qualified for districts as an unseeded player and lost to No. 6 seed Ava Marsh (Stroudsburg) in the first round, 6-4, 6-1.

DiGiacomo and Tranguch will be on the court this week for the District 11 doubles tournament. They are the sixth-seeded doubles pairing in the event, which began Tuesday and continues Thursday.

Emmaus’ Fiona Harvey and Avary Puliatte will make up another EHS doubles team in districts, along with teammates Katy Kapp and Nat Hillegass, who are seeded ninth in the field of 16 doubles team.
