Emmaus golfers compete in D-11 Championship
A few Emmaus golfers finished their seasons last week at the District 11 Championships.
The Hornets were led by senior Evan Walters, who shot 9-over par 81 last Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Steel Club to finish 11th overall in a field of 51 Class 3A players.
Walters made four bogeys and an eagle on the front nine to shoot 2-over par 38. A double-bogey and triple-bogey on his back nine, along with three bogeys, a birdie and three pars led to a back-nine 43.
With only the top six golfers advancing to the state championships, Walters missed the cut in his final season after advancing to states the two previous years.
“He said it stung and it should because he cares,” said Hornet head coach Patrick Birns. “He’s meant so much to this program. Anytime we can have one of the younger kids play with him it makes them a better player. We have five freshmen that look up to him. It’s pretty impressive. He’s meant a lot to us for sure.”
Anderson Francis finished 29th at districts, shooting 16-over par 88 in the event.
The Hornet junior made seven pars to go with six bogeys and five double-bogeys.
Jake Socci shot 21-over par 93 (43-50) at districts. The freshman made six pars, seven bogeys, three double-bogeys and a couple of quads during his round.
The Hornets’ Ella Bloszinsky earned a district medal with her performance at a subregional tournament last Monday, Oct. 5. She finished third overall at the event and second among players from District 11.
Saucon Valley’s Anthony Albano took this year’s District 11 3A title with an even-par 72, finishing three shots clear of Alex DiGiacinto (Nazareth) and Chris Gearheart (Pocono Mountain East) in a tie for second place.
In the team competition, Parkland shot 321 for first place, followed by Nazareth (324), Southern Lehigh (336) and Pocono Mountain East (340).
Tamaqua’s Sam Vinc won this year’s District 11 Class 2A title with a 4-over par 76. He finished a shot ahead of Schuylkill Haven’s Eli Barton in second place. Alan Evans (Schuylkill Haven) shot 79 for third place with Palmerton’s Joey Sold one shot back in fourth place.
Schuylkill Haven won the boys team title with a four-player team score of 333. Mahanoy Area (352), Notre Dame of Green Pond (353) and Northwestern Lehigh (357) were also part of the team tournament.
Schuylkill Haven’s Giuliana Hughes shot 13-over par 85 for first place in girls Class 2A.
Southern Lehigh’s Lexi Miller earned the District 11 girls 3A title at a subregional tournament last Monday.
