A new sculpture was unveiled Oct. 6 at the Bethlehem Visitors Center on the SteelStacks campus, the fifth in the annual sculpture series in the SteelStacks exhibition by ArtsQuest, and in partnership with the National Museum of Industrial History’s ‘Steel Weekend.’
Titled ‘Rove’, the piece was created by Pittsburgh native Jeffrey Repko.
Lisa Harms, vice-president of visual arts and education at ArtsQuest, explained a new sculpture is exhibited each year. Harms says there were fourteen submissions in the current round, some from new artists and others from long time artists, and some who were local. “They used multiple different materials,” says Harms. The choice was made by a selection committee.
Repko, a sculpture professor at the University of North Georgia, says he worked “24 hours a day for ten days” using industry as his inspiration. “I was thinking of labor and the human body,” he says about his “humanoid” appearing sculpture.
Using HDEP plastic in primary colors, the color yellow is minimized and the color blue is maximized according to Repko. The sculpture is supported by a stainless steel armature. He used a wooden model as his guide.
“It’s kind of like my own Legos,” says Repko of his creation.
