Kids set for game at Easton
After he dropped an interception in the previous game, Robert Wambold wanted to redeem himself.
He didn’t waste his next opportunity.
Wambold intercepted a pass in the second half to help Northampton seal a 14-7 victory over Pleasant Valley last week.
“My interception felt surreal,” said Wambold, a senior linebacker. “In my last game I had the opportunity to intercept the ball and dropped it, so I wanted to get that interception back really badly. When the opportunity came around I seized it, there was no way I was dropping that ball.”
Aside from their 35-0 loss to Parkland, Northampton’s defense has allowed 68 points in their other five games. Wambold saw a complete defensive effort against Pleasant Valley. The Konkrete Kids also recovered a pivotal fumble early in the game that set up their first score.
“That was a really big win for us,” beamed Wambold. “Pleasant Valley is a good team, and our defense was able to keep them to seven points, which was huge.
“I also believe the defense is clicking on all the cylinders. Everyone is doing their job, which is what is making our defense so great. Coach Toman is always preaching that the two most important stats in football are turnovers and final score and we won the turnover battle against Pleasant Valley.”
Toman saw a similar picture.”
“It was an overall, great team effort,” boasted Toman. “Our defensive staff did a great job getting kids ready to play on a short week, essentially defending two different offenses that they run.”
Chase Kessler ran for 184 yards on 28 carries, one an 80-yard burst in the opening half. Luke Stopay tossed the winning 33-yard touchdown pass with just under five minutes left in the game. Stopay, who took over for Zion McKinney, completed 8 of 10 for 73 yards, and his TD pass was the Kids’ first of the season. Stopay went 5-for-5 for 56 yards on their winning drive.
Kessler saw his team rise to the occasion. He also is confident they can have a strong season finish.
“I felt it went our way especially on defense for holding them down and getting many stops,” said Kessler. “But now, the offense has to get on a roll, and we will score more points and get more stops on defense.
“Every win I think is great for us and shows who we are. It’s motivation for us, and keeps us moving forward day-by-day and week-after-week.”
Toman also believes his offense will round into shape.
“Our offense did enough to get the win, but we are still trying to figure things out,” offered Toman. “As an offense we need to continue to develop and this was a nice confidence builder for us.”
The Kids (4-2) will travel to Easton (3-3), meeting an inconsistent team, yet one that always gives them trouble.
Kessler knows his team will be ready for the challenge.
“I see them as a competitive team with a lot of athletic players,” said Kessler. ”But we have more players on our team that are athletic and you’ll see that this Friday.”
KIDS KUDOS: Northampton has dropped 14 straight games to Easton. Their last victory was a 17-0 shutout in 2008 ... Easton is coming off a 39-0 shutout of Pocono Mountain East ... In that game, Easton’s Akhir Brown ran for 177 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Red Rovers had 339 yards rushing last week. Jeffrey Thomas is the Rover’s leading rusher for 384 yards, but he had only 22 last week. Easton quarterback Zahviay McGurn was 5-for-6 for 50 yards with a touchdown last week, and he has completed 62 of 116 passes for 837 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions ... Sean McPeek has 23 catches for 426 yards with two touchdowns. McPeek also has 25 tackles and two interceptions. Justin Cosover has a team-high 35 tackles ... For the season, Stopay is 12 of 19 for 96 yards with a touchdown and an interception ... Kessler has run for 795 yards with 12 touchdowns ... Wambold has a team-high 44 tackles ... Colby Brearman has two interceptions ... Logan Rusnock forced a fumble to end a drive, and it led to Kessler’s 80-yard touchdown run.
PREDICTION (My season record 4-2): This can be a season-changer for the Kids. This may be their best opportunity to end a long streak against Easton, which has been struggling to find their footing. But the Red Rovers have a multi–back attack that could cause trouble. Winning at Cottingham always involved getting a jump on the Rovers ... Kids may have finally found their passing game, which is a huge boost ... Easton’s run defense can be vulnerable as they allowed Parkland 277 yards and 167 against Bethlehem Catholic. Going with my heart here instead of my head ... Coach Toman can pick me up a large pie from Mario’s Pizza ... K-KIDS, 21-20.
