Zaiter more of a leader this season
Beginning Whitehall High School, Sebastian Zaiter wasn’t looking to join any sports teams. That was until he attended a symposium.
“I began running my freshman year after going to a high school sports symposium.” remembered Zaiter. “I didn’t really have an interest in any of the other sports, but running caught my attention and led me to join the team.”
Since then, Zaiter has been a member of the Zephyrs’ cross country and track teams. Entering his senior season, Zaiter believes his role is defined on the team.
“I see myself in more of a leadership role this year,” offered Zaiter. “It’s my senior year and I’ve been on the team since freshman year, so I want to help the newer runners the best that I can.”
First-year head coach Eugene Konno, who was a former assistant coach, sees Zaiter making strides on and off the course this fall.
“Sebastian is a senior that started with the team as a freshman,” noted Konno. “He has shown steady improvement each year and is coming off a solid track season in which he PR’d in both the mile and two mile distances. During his runs in practice he is looking very strong and fit which bodes well for a strong season.”
Konno is confident Zaiter can be among the Zephyrs’ top striders.
“He should be vying for a top-five spot on the team, and we are expecting him to score for us in the meets,” added Konno. “He is very coachable, soft spoken, and works extremely hard. Last season, he suffered an injury early on which took him out of the majority of races, so he is looking for redemption this season.”
Zaiter’s injury proved to be one of the biggest obstacles he has had to overcome. His personal best in the mile is 5:35, and it is 12:23 in the two-mile.
“The biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome was my ankle injury during track season,” recalled Zaiter. “I had to train extra hard when I came back to get back to where I was before and make up for the work I had lost.”
Zaiter credited both Konno and former head coach Brandon Hampton, who stepped down to serve as an assistant and switch roles with Konno.
“My biggest influences in running would definitely be my two coaches,” said Zaiter. “They put a lot of work into training us for meets and are always willing to run with us and push us to get better.”
Zaiter’s is anxious to prove himself this season.
“I’m hoping to beat my PR this season,” beamed Zaiter. My summer running went great. I stayed consistent with my training and got to spend a lot of time with my teammates. I’ve already seen myself making progress and getting faster.”
