Schaffer’s six-goal week helps keep girls soccer team unbeaten

The Northwestern Lehigh girls soccer team just keeps rolling along

The Tigers have run their undefeated streak to nine games with three more dominating wins last week against Colonial League opponents.

Northwestern outscored those three opponents 20-1.

Northwestern’s offense has put up 52 shots into the net this season and the defense has allowed opponents a total of just seven goals in 10 games.

Sophia Schaffer had six goals and four assists last week with freshman Elliana Fluke close behind with five goals and two assists.

Juliet Snyder scored four goals, including a hat trick in a 9-0 win against Pen Argyl. Fluke also scored three goals in the win. Bella Smith added a goal, and Dylan Ritter led the team with three assists to beat the Green Knights.

The other shutout of the week came against Bangor as the Tigers won 7-0. Fluke, Schaffer, and Amelia Glassberg all had two goals in the game and freshman Kaylynn Knauss added another. Freshman Jalyssa Kubat had an assist in the game as did Dylan Ritter, who had five assist on the week for Northwestern.

The closest game of the week was a 4-1 win against Southern Lehigh. Freshman goalie Brystol Hamm was called upon to make four saves in the win after recording just two saves in the two previous games. The defense didn’t allow any shots on goal in the win over Pen Argyl. The goal that Hamm allowed against the Spartans snapped a streak of six straight shutouts.

Schaffer had two goals with Glassberg and Juliet Snyder each scoring a goal. Ritter, Schaffer, and Smith all had assists.

Northwestern was the first team in District 11 to clinch a playoff spot and has since been joined by Emmaus. At 9-1-0, the Tigers are on top of the 2A rankings with Allentown Central Catholic (7-2-1) chasing them.

In the Colonial League, Northwestern is also at the top of the standings with a 7-0 record, just ahead of Notre Dame of Green Pond at 7-1. Northwestern holds the tiebreaker with the Crusaders by virtue of a 3-0 win earlier this month.

This week will give the Tigers a bit of a breather with just one game on the schedule when they play at Lehighton this week.
