LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Northwestern field hockey tops Pirates, SL

The Northwestern field hockey team came up with a pair of league wins over the past week and played to a scoreless tie in its other game.

The wins put the Tigers at 5-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Colonial League games.

The tie game against Saucon Valley was sandwiched between a pair of one-goal wins against Palisades and Southern Lehigh.

The Pirates and Tigers were scoreless until there was just 2:05 left in regulation. A gaggle of players in front of the goal made it difficult to credit the goal to any one player.

Somehow, the ball squirted out of the pack of players and into the goal for a 1-0 road win.

Northwestern picked up another close win against Southern Lehigh as they downed the Spartans 2-1 in a league contest.

Evelyn Alboucq and Nora Peterson had goals in the game with Alboucq also getting an assist on Peterson’s goal. Becca Gottlieb assisted on the goal by Alboucq.

The season opened with three straight wins and Northwestern scoring 11 goals in the three games.

Since then, the Tigers have just three goals in five games and were shutout twice in the stretch.

The Tigers are leading the West Division and are third overall in the Colonial League. In the district standings, Northwestern is just behind Pen Argyl (6-1-1) in the 1A standings.

Bangor is off to a 9-1-0 start overall and is 7-1-0 in Colonial League play.

The Tigers and Slaters meet this week.
