Freedom, Northampton tie in boys soccer

Freedom and Northampton’s boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 23 at Freedom.

The Patriots struck first with Omer Omana-Gaviria’s goal that came off an assist from Edmund Gyori in the first half.

“I just found him,” said Gyori. “From Nate Stannard, I took a touch, I took on the defender, I found an opening, and I found Omer. I think [Northampton] had a pretty good, strong defense, so breaking it was kind of hard, but we were swinging the ball, switching the field, finding the opening, and trying to score.”

The Konkrete Kids responded with a goal from Jacob Fallenstein, also in the first half.

“I would say the first half was definitely shot-heavy, just due to everyone wasn’t really prepared, but we transitioned really quick and our defense is always on,” said Freedom goalie Ben Rodriguez. “That goal on us was super unfortunate. We can’t really say anything about it. It was a good goal.”

Freedom coach Farid Bayramli had some halftime instructions for the Pates.

“He wanted us to find the wings more because the defenders were leaving big gaps in between the center back and the left back,” said Gyori, “so he was trying to get us to play through balls.”

The Pates created chances for themselves later in the match but were stopped by Northampton’s defense.

“We controlled the second half, but you know, at the end, we have to finish the game,” Coach Bayramli said. “Today, we got a lot of chances, we played a lot of wide areas, and that was actually a great game, but 1-1 is actually a great score today.”

Freedom’s defense was outstanding in the draw.

“Mason (Duzant) and Angel (Gaviria), when they link together, they’re almost unstoppable,” said Rodriguez. “Mason fills gaps, and Angel can dribble through almost anyone.”

Rodriguez made 8 saves for the Patriots.

Ryan Nahf had 10 saves for the Konkrete Kids.
