Boys soccer improves to 8-0
In seven of its eight games this season, the Northwestern Lehigh boys soccer team has won by two or more goals in seven of the games. Blue Mountain lost 2-1 to the Tigers, which gives the Eagles the distinction of being the only team to keep it close until the very end.
Over the past week, the Tigers added three more wins to their 8-0 record on the season with wins over Bangor, Pen Argyl and Southern Lehigh.
Cole Mertz continues to enjoy his senior season with at least one goal in every game this season and multiple goals in five of the eight games.
Last week, Mertz contributed six goals and three assists, including a hat trick in a 5-1 win against Pen Argyl. On the season, Mertz has 18 goals.
Weston Killar added a goal and an assist in the win against the Green Knights with freshman Zach Masenheimer adding his first varsity goal. Sophomore Bryce Leslie picked up his first assist of the season as well.
Jack Bissell got his first goal of the season and his second as a varsity player when the sophomore joined Mertz in the scoring column in a 3-1 win against Bangor.
The week ended with a 2-0 shutout win against Southern Lehigh with Mertz and Russell DeLong getting the goals in the win.
Goalie Dean Carl had three saves against Southern Lehigh. The senior now has four shutouts and has given up just four goals in eight games this season for Northwestern Lehigh.
The Tigers entered this week’s game leading the Colonial League standings and District 11 2A rankings.
With a 6-0 league record, Wilson (7-2-1 overall) is the top challenger. The Warriors are also the closest challenger in District 11 2A.
Northwestern has two games on the schedule for this week with a home game against Lehighton on Thursday and a nonleague game against Kutztown on Saturday.
