SUPERINTENDENT VISITS: There had to be a stunt with the Freedom Patriots Cheerleading and last Friday, Dr. Lajara was joined by FHS Principal Laurie Sage! Dr. Lajara also played the cymbals at the FHS football game.

BROUGHAL CAFE: Broughal Cafe is now open! The “Brew Crew” proudly served their first official coffee to BMS principal, Dr. Reese.

Broughal’s student-run coffee shop is about so much more than coffee, it’s about creating meaningful opportunities for our life skills students to build vocational, communication, and social skills while connecting with staff and strengthening our school community. We are so grateful to our community partners who have helped make our vision come to life! Here’s to more coffee and more smiles.

LATINO HISTORY: Last Friday, students from Freedom High School and Liberty HS participated in the Latino Roots of Bethlehem program as part of Bethlehem’s Sister City delegation with Patillas, Puerto Rico.

Students learned about the Latino men and women who were recruited to work at Bethlehem Steel, their journeys to South Bethlehem, and the lasting impact they and their families have made on our community.

The event included special guests from Puerto Rico, celebrating the connection between Bethlehem and our sister city of Patillas.

Experiences like these give our students the opportunity to explore Bethlehem’s history, connect with their community, and better understand the people and stories that helped shape the city we call home.

LITERACY GRANT: Congratulations to Jessica Redline, a digital literacy teacher at Spring Garden Elementary School, on receiving a Dollar General Youth Literacy Grant for her project, Interactive Literacy & STEM Experience. The grant will support kindergarten through second-grade students through an innovative approach that connects literacy and science using hands-on, kinesthetic learning. Students will pair nonfiction books about animals with sensory experiences using a

Sensory Integration Kit, incorporating textures such as water beads and sand. The goal is to help students strengthen learning and retention while creating an inclusive entry point for neurodivergent students and tactile learners who may benefit from learning beyond traditional text-based formats.

MENTAL HEALTH: We’re proud to celebrate the expansion of Lehigh University’s Community Voices Clinic (CVC) to Marvine ES.

The new location joins established CVC sites at Donegan ES and Broughal MS, bringing accessible mental health services even closer to Bethlehem students and families. The Community Voices Clinic has been serving the Bethlehem community for more than a decade through a partnership between Lehigh University, Bethlehem Area School District and St. Luke’s

University Health Network. The clinic provides mental health services at no cost to uninsured or underinsured children, adults and families, while also giving Lehigh graduate students valuable, supervised clinical experience. Bringing these services directly into neighborhood schools can help reduce barriers for families seeking support and strengthen the connections among students, families, educators, and community partners.

TEACHERS HONORED: Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical teachers Chef Gurcsik and Mrs. Knight were honored at the Northampton County Chapter of the PA Association of School Retirees luncheon on Sept. 17 as recipients of the 2026 Lauretta Woodson Award for their outstanding work as culinary educators.
