Northampton’s Kacee Medei was thrilled to get her senior field hockey season started this year.

It became more exciting when her team rallied from a 2-0 deficit and captured a 3-2 overtime victory over Easton in their opener Monday last month.

“It was a really good win,” said Medei after that contest, and who is a senior captain. “We were down at the half, but we kept calm and ended up winning in overtime. I was happy with the way we played since it was the first game.

“Everyone was worried about Easton because they are a tough team, but we’re tough too.”

Head coach Carrie Saul also was ecstatic about the start of the season, and the performance from her captain.

“Kacee just had a fantastic first game,” beamed Saul about the opening contest Saul’s team is 5-2-1 as of Tuesday. “She is a patient defender and is dedicated to helping others on and off the field. Kacee listens and makes corrections while playing and helps lead team discussions.”

Medei began playing the sport during COVID as an outlet.

“I started playing this sport during COVID because it was something to do to get me outside and just not be bored,” recalled Medei. “I felt comfortable when I was surrounded by all the girls around me on the Northampton team because of the welcoming environment.”

She has been guided by her father, Dan, who has helped steer her through the sport. Her coaches also have been a lifeline of support. As a result, she has realized her status on the team.

“My dad and my coaches have had the largest influence on my career,” said Medei. “Nobody in my family has played. I see my role as a leader and a learner.”

Medei also has overcome the mental part of the game.

“The biggest thing I had to overcome was having things get in my head,” said Medei. “It was about not letting the field hockey things bother me. I began to feel a lot more confident.”

Over the years, Saul has relished watching Medei evolve into a key member of her team.

“Kacee has really developed from a JV player as a freshman to a double- rostered player, playing behind some excellent mentors, to starting varsity this year,” boasted Saul. “She always has a smile on her face.

“She really stepped up to fill the leadership role after so many players graduated last year.”
