Whitehall Manor, the assisted care facility at 1177 Sixth St., held an outdoor Labor Day celebration Sept. 7 for residents, their loved ones and staff. Those present were treated to corn dogs, refreshments, ice cream and music during the approximately three-hour event.

Music was provided by the Whitehall Manor Choir and included a sing-along format of patriotic and longtime popular songs. The choir was led by Joe Biringer, director of song, who wore a patriotic pair of novelty glasses much becoming for the national holiday.

Biringer led the sing-along, featuring “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” “Grand Old Flag,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a singing of all four military service songs and more. As time went on, more attendees began to sing.

Liz Borrero, one of the Whitehall Manor facility’s activities leaders, coordinated the afternoon events. She was a “sleeves rolled-up” leader, helping serve food and refreshments, seating residents and helping lead the singing of the songs by Biringer and his choir. She also kept the event moving on its timeline.

Cyndi Miller, of Cementon, visited her mother Janet Focht, formerly of Coplay, who, as a resident, enjoys the numerous activities held at the facility. The spry 93-year-old sang songs and was social as she talked with others, clearly having fun at the Labor Day celebration.

Scott Beck, formerly of east Allentown, wore the most patriotic shirt, honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. His calm demeanor reflected his relaxed countenance as he enjoyed the holiday gathering.
