Bethlehem Catholic continued their hot start to the season with a win over Central Catholic in this year’s early season Holy War

The Hawks built a 21-0 lead, weathered a furious Allentown Central Catholic comeback and rallied late for a 35-24 victory Saturday afternoon at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

Becahi quarterback Axel Burkart threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns, connecting with Carter Vassa for scoring passes of 32 and 34 yards. Vassa also added a rushing touchdown as the Golden Hawks built their early advantage.

The Vikings responded with 24 consecutive points, including a 48-yard field goal by Bryson Baker on the final play of the first half, to take the lead.

Becahi (2-0) regained the momentum on the final play of the third quarter when Burkart found Tyre Lewis for a 64-yard touchdown. The Golden Hawks then put together a 13-play, 55-yard fourth-quarter drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Burkart to Justin Martinez with 2:24 remaining.

Vassa finished with five catches for 94 yards and two receiving touchdowns to go with his rushing score.

The Hawks visit Berks Catholic next week with their eyes set on a 3-0 start.

Liberty didn’t have the same fortune in their nonleague road contest at CB East Friday night.

The Hurricanes dropped to 0-2 with a 35-26 loss to the Patriots.

Liberty struggled to slow Central Bucks East running back Michael Price, who rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 9.1 yards per carry.

The Hurricanes will look to get into the win column Thursday night for their first home game of the season when they host Stroudsburg at 7 p.m.
