The Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley welcomed 39 local pediatric cancer families to its annual Back-to-School Bash on Aug. 12, bringing cancer warriors, siblings, bereaved siblings, parents and grandparents together for an afternoon of fun and connection.
For the first time, PCFLV hosted the event at its headquarters, utilizing its new family room addition, parking lot and backyard. The new space provided a setting for families to gather, celebrate the end of summer and prepare for the upcoming school year.
Inside the family room, 69 children received age-appropriate backpacks filled with school supplies. The supplies were collected through PCFLV’s annual community donation drive, with the organization purchasing additional items to ensure every backpack was filled. Families also selected free toys and participated in a themed photo booth.
Outside, PCFLV’s parking lot and backyard featured games including a football toss and cornhole, along with arts and crafts, face painting and balloon art. Families enjoyed grilled burgers and hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, soft pretzels and ice cream treats from the So Cool Bus.
Friends of PCFLV from Ai Orthodontics and the Emmaus Rotary Club helped lead activities, including a water gun game and a swimming pool fishing game, with prizes for participating children. Employees from Red Robin volunteered at food stations and assisted with backpack distribution.
“Our Back-to-School Bash is always one of our favorite events because it gives our families a chance to come together for some summer fun, and we get to watch the kids’ faces light up when they receive their backpack labeled with their name,” said Kristine Buss, PCFLV program and services manager. “Being able to host it at our own office this year made it even more special. Our new Family Room gave us a beautiful space to welcome our families, while our parking lot and backyard gave everyone room to enjoy all the activities.”
PCFLV fully funds the Back-to-School Bash, allowing participating families to attend at no cost. The event is made possible through donations of school supplies, snacks, toys and volunteer time from community members and partners.
