Holy Trinity hosts sale to benefit library

In a display of community connection, Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, the Friends of the Public Library of Catasauqua group, the library’s board and members of Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association joined forces to present a collaborative fundraising effort. All of the proceeds benefited the library.

The yard sale event was held in the social hall and two side rooms at the church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua. The social hall tables were packed with many eye-catching items for purchase. One side room was filled with kids toys, and the other was filled with clothing.

With no price tags on the merchandise, all the items were donated for sale, with most coming from Catasauqua-area donors.

Julianne Murphy, of Northampton, noted she works for Magic and More Hair Design in Catasauqua and had just left the yard sale with needed items. She said she was impressed with the sale and the cooperative effort.

Jody Thomas was the event greeter and volunteer and welcomed patrons by the entrance door with her friendly smile. She was happy in her role, with the number of donations and by the robust attendance.

Kitchen staff Emily Zacharda, Amy Feidler and Jean Decker served a number of items to eat, spanning breakfast and lunch menus. The breakfast menu offered baked goods, coffee, tea or juice. Lunch offerings were hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, chips, ice tea and soda.

The yard sale merchandise was not priced, with patrons selecting what they wanted. The purchaser assigned a cost when they checked out.

Janice Lathrop, a borough volunteer, was selling tickets at a cost of $5 a ticket for attendees to purchase. The ticket reserved the buyers right to return around 1 p.m. to pick whatever items remained that they wanted to buy but did not previously.

Volunteer sales clerks Cathy Rutman, Linda Gotso, Gene Gemmel and Beth Mellish, a former Catasauqua Borough Council member, cheerfully assisted by answering customers questions about what items they might purchase.

The streets around the church were filled with parked cars while others searched for a spot.

The patrons appreciated the volunteers and people from the four Catasauqua organizations who all appeared happy playing their parts to make the yard sale a success. Through it all, the volunteers showcased a clear sense of the Catasauqua community spirit.
