Bastian aims to be a leader

As a student at Siegfried Elementary School, Andrew Bastian always will remember playing football at recess.

Those were the humble beginnings that would lead to the start of his football career in middle school.

Now, a few years later, Bastian will be a pivotal player on Northampton’s offensive and defensive lines this fall.

“I started playing football in eighth grade,” reflected Bastian. “I loved it and got hooked. I’ve always played on the line. My favorite memory will always be playing recess football.”

Once he began, the senior took a few years to become acclimated to the game. He also found a new home where he quickly adjusted and developed a passion for it.

“I think I got comfortable with football last year,” stated Bastian. “I started hitting the weight room hard after my freshman year of football. I enjoyed the environment and just enjoyed the grind.”

Head coach John Toman expects Bastian to be a mainstay on the line and serve as a mentor for his younger teammates.

“He’s a great person, who always brings a positive attitude,” boasted Toman. “With his experience from last year, we will be leaning on him to be a leader for the new linemen. He loves the weight room and is extremely strong, which shows on the field. He is a great, overall student athlete.”

Bastian knows his stance on the team this fall.

“I think my role this year as a returning starter is to be a leader,” said Bastian. “I want to help the younger players learn and develop.”

Bastian, who also throws the shot, javelin, and discus in track, has been appreciative of his parents, Robert and Alissa, for their constant support. He has a vivid memory of the Konkrete Kids’ victory over Nazareth last year.

“We were the underdogs in that game,” gushed Bastian. “It felt great to win that game. “

Coming off a 5-7 season last year, Bastian believes his team can reverse the trend this season.

“I think the team chemistry is going to be amazing this year,” boasted Bastian. “We’ve all been playing sports together all our lives. This is the closest I’ve ever been with people on a sports team.

“I can’t wait for the season. Our whole team has been grinding this offseason working really hard.”

And Bastian will certainly play his part.
