District 11 wrestlers are in line to receive more regional qualifying berths beginning with the 2027 PIAA postseason under a proposal approved by the wrestling steering committee that must still pass two additional readings before taking effect.

The biggest change comes on the girls’ side, where the Southeast Regional Tournament at Quakertown would expand from an eight-wrestler bracket to 13 competitors. District 11’s allotment would increase from three to five qualifiers, prompting the addition of a fifth-place match at the district tournament. District 1 also would receive five regional berths, while District 12 would earn three after conducting its own district tournament.

In boys’ Class 3A, District 11 will expand from five to seven regional qualifiers, requiring the district tournament to add a seventh-place bout. Liberty will again serve as the host site for both the District 11 and Northeast Regional tournaments.

Under the proposal, Districts 2 and 4 will merge into a single qualifying tournament, creating an opportunity for additional regional berths. District 11 secured both the sixth and seventh qualifying spots.

District 11 also is slated to gain an additional qualifier in Class 2A boys’ wrestling, increasing from four to five regional berths. Districts 1 and 12 will combine into one qualifying tournament after previously holding separate events, while District 3 will receive seven regional qualifiers.

The PIAA also announced several classification changes for the next two-year cycle. Three-time Class 2A state runner-up Bishop McCort will move up to Class 3A under the competition formula, while four-time defending Class 2A champion Faith Christian remains in 2A under new head coach Tom Hontz. Faith Christian also will launch a girls wrestling program for the 2026-27 season.

Jim Thorpe will return to Class 2A after competing in 3A, the only District 11 school changing classifications.

District 11 will continue to receive two qualifying berths in both the Class 2A and Class 3A PIAA Team Wrestling Championships, which will remain in Johnstown for the next two seasons.
