After their finish last season, Catasauqua girls’ field hockey team is anxious to get back on the field this fall.

The Rough Riders ended their season with a heartbreaking, 1-0 loss to Pen Argyl in a District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal playoff game. They had momentum, as they ended the regular season winning two of their final three games.

But the Roughies saw their season finish with an overall 7-12 record, mainly due to a seven-game losing streak.

Head coach Amanda Freiler has been impressed with her squad’s work ethic during the summer.

“Summer has been busy,” said Freiler. “The girls have been working hard. They have speed and agility training twice a week, practice once a week, and then summer league games once a week.”

The Roughies are playing in the Bethlehem Catholic summer league. It should serve as a tuneup for the regular season.

“It’s been competitive,” offered Freiler. “We only had one game so far against Nazareth. We lost 3-1, but we had a lot of our seniors missing and had our upcoming freshman goalie in the cage. I was impressed.”

Catty lost Shelby Haldeman, who was their leading scorer the past few years. Haldeman finished her career netting 39 goals and 22 assists.

The Roughies will return goalie Lizzy Bass, forward/midfielder Kamryn Pushkar, midfielder Ava Wetzel, defender Esmeralda Serrano. Freiler also has liked what she has seen from her incoming freshmen.

“Bass has over 400 saves, and she should surpass 500 for her career in her senior season,” said Freiler. “We have some other returnees, and we will be ready for the season.”

The Roughies will open the season Aug. 26 against Pocono Mountain East.
