“Music student performances at Musikfest are always a crowd-pleaser,” says Rosemary Murdy-Haber, a member of the Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association (LVMTA), adding, “It’s such a joy seeing and hearing these student performances on piano, violin and voice.”

The Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association “Musikfest Recital” is 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2; Musikfest Café, ArtsQuest Center, SteelStacks, Bethlehem.

Student performers are recommended by their LVMTA music teachers and selected by audition.

Says Murdy-Haber, “This year, we have nine music studios represented by 25 students who have such amazing talent.”

Selections range from Irving Berlin’s “I’ve Got the Sun in the Morning” to “Someone Like You” from the 1990 musical “Jekyll & Hyde,” “Journey to the Past” from the film “Anastasia” and the spooky and mysterious Martha Mier tune “The Midnight Horseman.”

Several of the classical works include Johannes Brahms’ “Intermezzo in A minor, Op. 76 No. 7,” Frederic Chopin’s “Mazurka in G minor Op. 67 No. 2,” Maurice Ravel’s elegant masterwork “Sonatine: I. Modere” and Alan Hovhaness’ dynamic “Macedonian Mountain Dance.”

“I’ve been chairperson for this LVMTA event since 2012, hosting this event so our talented students can showcase what they have learned from our professional team of music educators,” says Murdy-Haber.

“Music is a gift. It’s a lifetime sport. No one gets benched. Everyone gets a chance to play,” Murdy-Haber says.

Lehigh Valley Music Teachers Association is a professional organization dedicated to supporting music instructors and fostering musical excellence among students in Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and surrounding regions.

The Bethlehem Municipal Band presents a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 9, Bethlehem Rose Garden, Bethlehem.

“For this concert, we provide our audience an eclectic selection of music, including traditional band pieces, film music as well as lesser-known works,” says David Crosby, Director of the Bethlehem Municipal Band.

Leroy Anderson composed three equestrian-themed pieces, including “The Old Horse and Buggy,” depicting an old-time leisurely ride in the countryside.

Says Crosby, “Leroy Anderson is an American treasure, and was responsible for giving the modern symphonic band its own repertoire before we even had one.

“Most of his music was written for The Boston Pops Orchestra when Arthur Fiedler was their music director. I am so glad that his music has been able to live on for so many years, making him a staple in community band programs all over the country.”

The Jay Dawson arrangement of “Tennessee Salute” includes “Wabash Cannonball,” “Tennessee Waltz” and “Rocky Top.” John Towner Williams fans will enjoy selections from “Superman.”

No band concert is complete without a John Philip Sousa march. Sousa, an avid equestrian, composed “The Black Horse Troop” to honor Troop A of the Cleveland, Ohio, National Guard. Sousa conducted the work’s debut in 1925 at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland with cavalry troops riding their horses directly onto the stage to stand behind the band.
