Shirley L. Werner

Walnutport Family Eye Care receptionist

Shirley L. (Spangler) Werner, 93, of Whitehall, died July 1, 2026.

She was the devoted wife of the late Francis V. Werner, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, faith, and family.

Born and raised in York, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mary Spangler.

She grew up with one brother and three sisters and carried the values of kindness, compassion, and devotion to family throughout her life.

She dedicated herself first and foremost to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

As a stay-at-home mother, she poured her heart into raising her five children, often saying she had “such a blessed and beautiful family.”

Nothing brought her greater happiness than seeing her family together, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Later in life, she worked as an assistant librarian at the Coplay Library and at the Lehigh County courthouse in the Recorder of Deeds office before becoming a receptionist at Walnutport Family Eye Care.

She enjoyed reading, music, dancing, and had a special love for animals, welcoming many beloved dogs and cats into her home throughout the years.

One of her greatest joys was spending time at the family’s cherished cabin, Bear Paw Lodge, in North Central Pennsylvania.

It was there that she and Francis created countless memories with their children and grandchildren, enjoying peaceful weekends filled with laughter, love, and the beauty of the outdoors.

She is survived by her loving children: Jeanie (Richard, deceased) Shott, Sheila (William) Dayton, Susan (Donald) Sweeney, F. Joseph (Annette) Werner, and Lisa (Alan) Jones.

She was also the proud and devoted grandmother of 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Msgr. David L. James at 10 a.m. July 28, 2026, in Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church, 4 South Fifth St., Coplay.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation 5 to 7 p.m. July 27, 2026, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, 444 Pershing Blvd., Whitehall, located one block south of the Fullerton Avenue exit of Route 22. There will be no visitation on Tuesday in the church.

Interment will follow in Arlington Memorial Park, Whitehall.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor her with a memorial contribution, her family suggests a donation to either the Lehigh Valley Humane Society and Vet Clinic, 640 Dixon St., Allentown, PA 18103, or www.lehighvalleyhumanesociety.org or Animals in Distress, P.
