LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Prepare for dangerous heat

Lehigh County officials are urging residents to take precautions when a period of dangerously hot and humid weather is forecast to impact the region.

County emergency management officials emphasize that extreme heat can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and those who work or exercise outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and heat advisories, and to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Officials also remind the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a short period.

To reduce the risk of heat-related illness, residents should take steps to stay cool. Spending time in air-conditioned buildings is strongly recommended, and those without access to air conditioning are encouraged to visit public places such as libraries, shopping centers, or community spaces. Outdoor activities should be limited to the early morning or evening hours, with frequent breaks taken in shaded areas.

Additional precautions include wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing, using sunscreen, and keeping homes cooler by closing blinds or curtains during peak heat hours. Residents are also urged to check on family members, neighbors, and others who may be particularly susceptible to extreme temperatures.

Staying hydrated is critical during periods of extreme heat. Officials advise drinking water consistently throughout the day and avoiding beverages that may contribute to dehydration, such as those containing caffeine, alcohol, or high amounts of sugar.

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly but are largely preventable. By staying informed, keeping cool, and maintaining proper hydration, residents can reduce their risk and stay safe during the upcoming heat wave.

For the latest weather updates and safety information, residents should follow guidance from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials.
