Lower Macungie gets off to 5-2 start in LV Legion

In past seasons, there were enough baseball players in the East Penn School District for two Lehigh Valley Legion baseball team.

This season, like some other recent seasons, Lower Macungie is the only team from the EPSD area as the LVL is down to just five teams.

Lower Macungie, under longtime head coach Jeff Smith, is off to a 5-2 start in the league and 5-3 overall.

The team had a balanced attack in the early part of the season with a batting average of .294 and a team ERA of 4.14.

Robbie Barnes and Ryan Hummel have been stellar on the mound.

Neither has allowed an earned run this season and Hummel has seven scoreless innings to his credit, while Barnes has allowed just one unearned run in 11 innings.

Cole Moreau has a 1.40 ERA through two starts and a relief appearance covering 10 innings of work. In those 10 innings, Moreau recorded 19 strikeouts for the Mustangs.

At the plate, Aaron Fleetwood is batting .533 with a 1.033 OPS for Lower Macungie. Barnes is second on the team in hitting with a .435 average with a team-high 10 hits, including two doubles and a triple and team-high six runs scored.

Leonardo Soto is batting .400 with seven games played this season and has a team-high 1.225 OPS.

Among players with at least 15 at-bats, Chase Simmons is batting .364 and Drayce Schmidt is at .316 for the season.

Last week, Lower Mac pounded Whitehall-Coplay 12-1 and collected 13 hits in the game.

Fleetwood, Cameron Pengelly, Zach Ehritz, Ben Roth, and Simmons all collected two hits. Ehritz led the way with three RBI and Simmons drove in two. Nine different players drove in runs.

On the mound, Hummell threw three shutout innings and Jack Sparango threw two innings, allowing just one unearned run.

South Parkland is 7-1 and leads the LVL standings with the Mustangs just 1.5 games behind the Trojans.

The two teams are the only teams in the league with winning records. North Parkland is 3-4, Whitehall-Coplay 3-5, and Salisbury 0-6.
