Moore Township looks to finish season strong

First-year Moore Township manager Steve Lynch can attribute his team’s 0-14 record this season to two major factors.

It’s been about inexperience and errors. The Redhawks made 43 errors in their first 11 games.

“We have some guys who are new to the game,” said Lynch recently. “Nerves have been a killer. We had a number of guys who had to get used to everything out there. We have fundamentally struggled with our throwing and catching, and the errors hurt us.

“Our Achilles’ heel has been trying to always play from behind and giving up a few extra outs per inning. We have been in a lot of games, but we make some errors that turn the game for us.

“We can’t give teams seven or eight outs in an inning.”

Yet, Lynch who was a catcher, pitcher, and third baseman at Mansfield State University, likes his team’s makeup.

“We do have a good group of guys,” stated Lynch. “They’re certainly are working on their games. It is a good age group at 15 and 16 years old, and they still are impressionable.”

Lynch pointed to his son, Zane, who as of a few games ago led the team with a .600 average, and has four RBIs and four runs scored. His son has battled back after he missed the first few weeks with an injury.

He also cited Dalton Sherry, who was recently hitting .286, with four RBIs, 19 stolen bases and also has 10 strikeouts in 12 innings, as well as Xavier Abruzzi, who was at .214 with four RBIs.

“Zane is hitting the ball,” said Lynch. “Dalton is a good, productive guy, and Xavier has been consistent.”

Lynch also has been impressed with Nate Cherry (9.1 innings, 7 strikeouts, 14 stolen bases), Kelly Leitch (.444), and Josh Silfies (9 innings, 7 strikeouts, 13 stolen bases).

“Nate Cherry has really come along, and Kelly Leitch has been solid behind the plate,” added Lynch. “Josh Silfies is a great utility guy, and he is fast on the bases.”

Lynch is still optimistic as his team winds down its season.

“We’re definitely getting better,” stressed Lynch. “Our pitching is getting better, and we’re hiking the ball.”

Zane Lynch has been one of the top players for Moore Township this season.
