Liberty multi-sport athlete, Leah Onia, has committed to continue her swimming career at the University of Scranton this fall.
On a suggestion by Onia’s grandfather, the 2026 Liberty grad “ended up loving it.”
Onia then decided to reach out to a familiar face, former Nazareth assistant swim coach and current Scranton head coach Chris Brown.
“I met with him and the team on accepted student’s day, and I absolutely loved it,” Onia said.
This past winter, Onia won the District XI bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke.
Onia was also on Liberty’s 200 medley relay team that captured district silver, and the 200 free relay that earned a fourth place medal.
The medley relay qualified for the PIAA state meet in March.
“Going to states was an unbelievable opportunity,” said Onia. “I have a lot more to give to swimming, and I’m really excited for the challenge.”
Onia won’t be limited to the breaststroke at the University of Scranton, expressing interest in the 200 IM and whatever else comes her way.
“I’m very happy that I’ll have room to grow in other events. I love to explore other things,” she said.
Scranton is a member of the Landmark Conference, and the women’s swim team were crowned conference champions last year.
“I’m so excited to step in and join the team,” said Onia, who is planning to major in biology as well as participate in the Magis Honors Program in STEM.
Leah Onia swims in a summer league event and will continue her career at Scranton.
