Gilbert still enjoys the game
Despite being away from his high school basketball playing days for a few years, Zach Gilbert hasn’t lost his desire for the hardwoods.
The former Whitehall, three-sport standout is playing for Team Escobar in the North Catasauqua basketball league, and he is the second-leading scorer, averaging 17.7 points per game.
Since his graduation from West Chester University, Gilbert has been playing in the league for the past five seasons. It has proved to be a good outlet for him.
“I’ve actually met some of my best friends now playing summer basketball,” reflected Gilbert. “I got to know the (David and Matt) Kachelreis twins and Cole Campbell who went to Emmaus.
“We (Campbell) used to be rivals in high school, and fast forward 10 years, and I’m in his wedding.”
After graduation, Gilbert became a second-grade teacher and an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Whitehall. He coaches in middle school.
Gilbert, a former post player for the Zephyrs, has noticed changes in the game.
“I feel like the game today is definitely more fast paced,” noted Gilbert. “Tougher shots are being taken. You see big guys shooting threes. Coaching basketball at Whitehall, I see both sides of it. You need structure, but you also need freedom to play at your pace.”
Whitehall head coach Jeff Jones appreciated Jones’ presence on the court.
“Zach was a very good three-sport athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball,” recalled Jones. “He was a good shooter who played primarily away from the basket despite his size. He forced bigger guys away from the rim.”
Jones believes Gilbert’ demeanor and repertoire has benefited him in his current role.
“As a coach Zach has developed a good relationship with our players,” added Jones. “He handles our junior high team. It was an easy transition when he started coaching because he knew our system and expectations. Once the junior high season is complete, he steps in as a scout player for our opponents and challenges our varsity guys.”
Gilbert doesn’t see his basketball playing days ending anytime soon.
“What keeps me playing basketball is that I’m just so damn competitive,” beamed Gilbert. “It gives me something to look forward to. It’s fun competing with your close friends, and it’s good cardio too.”
