Hanover OKs first payment for ball courts project

At the June 17 Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council meeting, under new business, council authorized the township manager to release payment No. 1 in the amount of $44,230.25 for SLC Excavating LLC for the Sherwood Park pickleball and basketball courts project.

Many municipalities nationwide are developing pickleball courts in their park and recreation areas for residents to exercise and in response to pickleball’s growing popularity. Pickleball is becoming an incredibly popular paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Played either as singles or doubles on a badminton-sized court using a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, the sport is accessible to all ages and skill levels. It is essentially a low-impact exercise for most players.

Pickleball delivers a potent mix of cardiovascular, joint-friendly movement and social engagement. Wellness experts hope as the public engage the fun sport, they will get much-needed exercise, and as they strive to improve their pickleball skills, a recognition of their increased fitness might cause them to adopt a wellness lifestyle.

Also at the meeting, council introduced ordinance 674, bill 2026-06, an ordinance of the township of Hanover, Lehigh County, and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania that installs a referendum to allow electronic voting by township council members when an in-person quorum is not physically present.

In unfinished business, ordinance 673, bill 2026-05, an ordinance of the township of Hanover, Lehigh County, and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, was council approved. It vacates a portion of Postal Road and provides for its severability and an effective date of the severance.

All ordinances are available for residents to review by visiting hanleco.org or by calling the township office.

Council approved the minutes of the June 3 regular council meeting. Council also voted to approve the bills as submitted for June 17.

The next council meeting will be 7 p.m. July 1 at the township municipal building, 2202 Grove Road, Allentown. It is an in-person-only meeting. Visit hanleco.org to review the meeting’s agenda.
