Curtain Rises: “Hair” at Civic Theatre; “Junie B” at NCC

Civic Theatre of Allentown presents an iconic rock musical and Northampton Community College stages a children’s show based on a beloved book series.

Civic Theatre presents “Hair: The Tribal Love-Rock Musical,” June 19 to July 5, Nineteenth Street Theatre.

NCC’s Bill Mutimer Summer Theatre Series presents “Junie B’s Essential Survival Guide to School,” June 17 to July 25, on the Bethlehem Township campus.

Set in the turbulent 1960s, “Hair” follows a group of youths searching for truth and belonging amid war, protest and cultural upheaval.

Claude (Liam Thompson) is torn between free-spirited rebellion and military duty.

“Hair” celebrates connection, individuality and resistance. Its themes of protest, identity and unity are still relevant.

The high-energy rock musical defined a generation, with iconic songs like “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” and “Good Morning Starshine,” celebrating love and freedom.

“Hair” is directed by William Sanders, Civic Theatre of Allentown Artistic Director. Music direction is by Steve Reiseter. Choreography is by Rose Fortkamp and Sarai Misic.

The cast includes Anthony Rizzuto, Andy Van Antwerp, Dylan Miller, Rachel Kemmerer, Makenna Copeland, Melody Portnoy, August Fegley, Sarai Misic, Arlo Guzman, Nat Miller-McBride, Ericka Coencsits, Nneoma Akpunonu, Nico Rodriguez, Rose Fortkamp, Chloe Jarjous, Zoe Mulzet, David Lippincott, Julia Brown, Angie Dries, Maia Spears, Robert Morgan, Jayden McFaddin, Keane Carrington and Alyssa Weber.

The book and lyrics are by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. Music is by Galt MacDermot.

The show opened on Broadway in 1968 and its 3 million-selling original Broadway cast recording spawned several Top 10 hits.

“Hair” contains mature content, including brief nudity, and is not recommended for audiences under 16. Patrons under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or adult.

Based on the bestselling books about a wisecracking first-grader, the saga of Junie B. Jones continues in “Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School,” a funny and heartwarming follow-up to “Junie B. Jones, The Musical.”

“Junie B. Jones” is a children’s book series written by Barbara Park and illustrated by Denise Brunkus published 1992 to 2013 that centers on “almost six-year-old” Junie B. and her adventures in kindergarten and first grade.

A self-appointed expert on all things first grade, Junie B. (Audrey Wood) is determined to write the ultimate guide: “Junie B.’s Essential Survival Guide to School.” As she deals with writer’s block and constantly getting into trouble, Junie B. realizes that she still has a lot to learn.

The show has upbeat songs by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (“Dear Edwina”)

The cast includes Auqinay Jones, Declan Messics, Giovanni Failla, Jacob Piccini, Madisyn Bonilla and Maricel Wheatley.
