Softball seniors had successful four-year run
One of the story lines of the high school softball season was following Northwestern Lehigh on its pursuit of a fourth straight trip to the District 11 finals.
In each of the past three seasons the Lady Tigers lost in the finals, leaving them one win shy of a district championship. With a strong core of returning players and an impressive senior class, 2026 was going to be their season.
As it turned out, that story line fell short when Northwestern was eliminated by North Schuylkill 12-4 in the district semifinals.
The story of the 2026 Tigers was somewhat routine through the regular season.
A pair of nonleague losses to Hamburg and Kutztown did nothing to derail the team. Itβs only league loss was in a 7-5 game against Notre Dame of Green Pond.
Nobody was too surprised when the Colonial League playoffs opened with the Tigers as the top seed and Palmerton right behind them. The Tigers rolled to a 10-0 win over the Blue Bombers to win the league championship and collect what they hoped would be their first of three gold medals for their collection.
In districts, Northwestern dispatched Allentown Central Catholic 10-0 before going up against North Schuylkill.
After losing just two seniors following the 2025 season, Northwestern is going to have some empty lineup spots to fill for next season.
Six seniors β Ella Bressi, Lizzie Diehl, Abby Dunstan, Emma Freeman, Lily Kinnon, and Molly Schlofer β have all graduated. All six of them were in the starting lineup and were one of the more productive senior classes in a while.
Dunstan and Freeman have formed the best pitcher-catcher combination in the Colonial League.
This season, Diehl was also given the chance to pitch and did a tremendous job. Freeman and Diehl combined for a 2.44 ERA for the Tigers. Rising senior Ainsley Behler also took a few turns in the circle and finished with a 1.58 ERA leaving her as the leader in the clubhouse to be the featured pitcher coming into next season.
The offense was a gang of hitters that opposing teams had to face.
As a team, Northwestern hit .391 this season with 19 home runs. The top six hitters all hit over .400 for Northwestern with Bressi batting .500 out of the leadoff spot while stealing eight bases. Another rising senior, Natalie Conner hit .485 for Northwestern and led the team with 36 runs scored.
Dunstan took care of the power with nine home runs and 31 RBI, both of which led the team.
