Theater Review: “A Chorus Line” is a kick at NCC

The title is “A Chorus Line.”

It’s not “The Chorus Line.”

The implication is that “A Chorus Line,” as a musical and work of theater, is ubiquitous: that the struggles, lessons and triumphs of “a” chorus line are universal, and can occur on any stage, and not only for aspiring dancers and actors, but the rest of us.

“A Chorus Line” is in The Bill Mutimer Summer Theatre Series, through June 14, Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Northampton Community College, Bethlehem Township.

The June 7 performance was seen for this review.

“A Chorus Line” was meta before the term became a cliché. “A Chorus Line” typically would be described as a backstage musical. The storyline is about process, not only to land a role as a dancer in the chorus line of a Broadway musical. “A Chorus Line” is about the dance of life.

“A Chorus Line,” with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante, takes place on a bare stage as 17 dancers audition for eight parts in a Broadway show chorus line.

The original Broadway production opened in 1975, received 12 Tony Award nominations, won nine Tonys and the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The resiliency of the show, which ran for 15 years on Broadway, was recognized at the 79th Tony Awards June 7 with a tribute performance by Rachel Zegler of the show’s “What I Did for Love,” to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.

The characters, dialogue and storyline in “A Chorus Line” are based on interviews with dancers. The characters’ lives are revealed in monologues and song, prodded and, yes, provoked in the NCC production by the choreographer, Zach (an excellent Jason Roth). The theater-goer is taken into the confidences of the characters on stage, relating to winners and losers, as we all are at one, ahem, stage or another in our lives.

The NCC production is directed with care, compassion and certitude by Jessica López-Barkl and Darah Donaher with spectacular choreography by Ryan Skerchek. The key here is extension and on point. Each actor in the cast of 25 vibrates with energy, poise and enthusiasm. Nothing is held back.

Music Director Lucille Kincaid, on keyboards, is one among the eight musicians who propel the bright and shiny score to emotional heights of grandeur. The jazz-rock-pop is so compelling, the actors have no choice but to excel.

Tech director is Brett Oliveira. Costumer is Todd Burkel.

Act one’s nine songs and act two’s six songs (including one reprise) are each story-songs in and of themselves, telling a character’s particular point of view, emotions and dreams. Each song and each performance of them is a standout.

Mike Gueriere (Mike) is engaging and vulnerable in “I Can Do That.”

Gianna Neal (Sheila), Riley Lusk (Bebe) and Mackenzie Alexander Hall (Maggie) are wonderful in “At the Ballet.”

Deb Katz (Kristine) and Daxton Chappell (Al) are a terrific duo in “Sing!”

Mia Quesada (Diana) is humorous and exuberant in “Nothing” and commanding in “What I Did For Love.”

Ava Boyd (Val) is a show-stopper in “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three.”

Eileen Lee (Cassie) is revealing and triumphant in song and dance for “The Music and the Mirror.”

Noteworthy are Dami Shote (Larry), Melody Chen (Connie), Charlotte O’Keefe (Judy), Kaleb Bell (Richie), Max McCurdy (Bobby) and Spencer Del Carmen (Paul).

The company’s vocals are resplendent in the opener, “I Hope I Get It” and the signature anthem, “One.”

When the cast steps out in gold costumes for the finale and reprise of “One,” strutting in unison in a circle swirling around the stage, the show achieves a satisfying conclusion for the entire cast. They have made it. There’s no denying that.

And there’s no denying the terrific NCC summer theater production. Don’t miss it.
