Summer hoops back in Catty, North Catty
Summer basketball is back and alive in Catasauqua.
Both the Catasauqua and North Catasauqua men’s leagues recently got underway, and they both are believed to be the lone adult summer leagues remaining in the Lehigh Valley.
Catasauqua’s league, under the guidance of head boys’ coach Eric Snyder, usually has 10 teams with its format. However, this season, Catty will have eight teams - Catty Corner, AAO, Daku’s, The Tribe, LV Jays, Zone 6, Reichenbach Oil, and Rebels Farm.
“We were hoping to have 10 teams,” said Snyder, whose involvement with the league traces back to 1986. “It’s great to see the league is still going. We expect to have another strong season.”
Catty began play May 28, and the league will have three games per night on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the playground. The last regular-season date is June 25 with the playoffs beginning June 30.
On the opening night, Catty Corner, LV Jays, and Daku’s claimed victories.
At North Catty, play began May 11 with 10 teams under director Jason Bogden. The teams are: Pammer Chiropractic, B’Town Blazers, Expert Auto Tinting, Team Escobar, Curmaci Dental, Jay Gilbert and Family, AAO, Bet on Us, Palermo’s Italian Grill, and GR Electric.
Heading into this week’s play, Pammer had a 3-0 slate followed by the B’Town Blazers (3-1), Expert Auto Tinting (3-1), Team Escobar (2-1), and Curmaci Dental (3-2) among the top-five teams.
Former Whitehall standout Zach Gilbert of Team Escobar is the leading scorer averaging 21.3 points per game, Arnel Lewis of B’Town Blazers is at 18.1, and Luke Keppel, another former Whitehall standout, is at 16.5.
Catasauqua and GR Electric teammates Zayvian Vaz and Alalani Nix are averaging 11.6 and 10.0 points respectively. Anthony Brinkley, another former Catty standout, is averaging 13.8 points for Curmaci Dental.
North Catasauqua’s league also will be playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays with their regular-season concluding June 30.
