Colonial League gets by Schuylkill League

SCHUYKILL HAVEN – There was a blue moon hovering over Rotary Field on the gorgeous Schuylkill Haven High School campus, there were numerous stars, too.

Oh yeah, not only the ones in the sky, Schuylkill and Colonial League football all-stars were racing up and down the field clamoring for last scholastic notoriety and cheers, too.

Take for instance the way the Colonial stars with a bushelfull of talent from Notre Dame Green Pond, to Lehighton, Catasauqua, Penn Argyl and Lehighton, which turned into a sprint especially the way Alex Clark breezed past the Schuylkill secondary. Just a week ago, Clark, of Notre Dame, was a medalist at the PIAA championship in the 200-meter race.

The kid could fly, as he led the talented core of standouts to an impressive 46-34 victory and earned his sides offensive MVP award.

Or how about Schuylkill Haven’s Nico “The Italian Stallion” Carestia, who turned on his speed en route to 246 all-purpose yards rushing and receiving garnering the Skook’s MVP offensive award.

For sure, Marian’s Jah Bushati had a center stage defensive MVP award for Schuylkill, and the standout defensive play for the winners, Chris Wellington the superb Catasauqua linebacker taking honors for the winners.

The game started at a snails pace before the fireworks erupted. The Schuylkill kids were staked to the first lead of the game 6-0, when Haven’s quarterback Max Heim, headed to Myrtle Beach Prep School, used his big linebacker-type body to muscle in for the first score. It call came about thanks to Williams Valley’s Evan Achenbach’s turnover for a 53-yard run to the 11 put his side in grand position for the initial touchdown.

A few moments later, the Colonial League quickly tied it capping a 83-yard march on the quickness of East Stroudsburg-bound Sean Steckert zooming 47 yards to paydirt. The Southern Lehigh star also later rocketed 64 yards using his power and speed to burst into the end zone for the final touchdowns for the winners.

The Colonial League galloped away from its foe zipping to a 20-6 lead riding the accuracy of both its quarterbacks; Palisades Jack Trickel and Pen Argyl’s Mason Sous. They teamed not only with the speed-demon Clark, but Lehighton’s Caden Meek at times, and at times another Catty star Emmanuel Bolmer. Clark and Trickel hooked at the 11-minute mark of the second quarter for a nifty 43-yard touchdown. Once again, Clark put the pedal to the medal to breeze past the Schuylkill defense and on its next possession, scored for the two-touchdown lead, thanks to Lehighton’s Austin Green’s huge defensive 30-yard interception return before Catty’s Bolmer’s PAT.

On the ensuing series of play for the Skook stars, Carestia was lighting up Rotary Field’s scoreboard. This talented star, with the nose for the open space, found the near sideline, sprinted past the Colonial secondary and legged it to the end zone and Bushati booted the placement for a 20-13 score. Ah, the other guys were just waiting in the wings and on the very next possession, Clark and Trickel were making music on a 58-yard pass and catch en route to a 26-13 lead the respite.

Then late in the third quarter, Soos let fly with a bomb to Clark for 52 yards and expanding the lead 32-13. Carestia and the Skook answered with an 11-yard touchdown. But Meck latched on to a well-thrown Trickel pass for 55 yards and the eventual winners were in a commanding lead to open the final quarter. Though Schuylkill punched home a 1-yard touchdown from Blue Mountain’s Reese Miller, Stecker’s jaunt made the final statement for the Colonial League winners.

Saturday’s game marked the fifth time for the all-star contest between the two leagues.
