Two Eagle Scout projects approved by council

At its May 27 meeting, Alburtis Borough Council focused on community improvement projects, infrastructure closeout work, and employee training initiatives while continuing routine borough business.

Council opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag before hearing comments from residents during the public comment portion of the agenda. Members also approved the minutes from the May 13 meeting and authorized payment of borough bills.

Mayor Hector Moss did not have a report for the evening.

Next, council received a report from the borough’s fiscal consultants regarding municipal financial matters and ongoing budget-related planning. Councilman Mehmet Birtek requested and received council’s approval to invite the borough consultant to a meeting to go over the numbers in more detail.

The next major portion was dedicated to proposed Eagle Scout projects within the borough. Sarah Lysinger presented a project proposal for improvements in the Memorial Church area, including repairs to a brick walkway, flower planting, and repairs to a bench near a memorial stone. Eagle Scout projects are commonly designed to provide long-term community benefits while allowing Scouts to demonstrate leadership and project management skills required to attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

Council also heard a presentation from Christian Wiesner regarding a separate Eagle Scout project involving improvements to the borough’s “Welcome to Alburtis” signs. The proposal included planting flowers and adding retaining walls to improve the appearance and landscaping surrounding the entrance signs. Municipal gateway signs are frequently used to identify communities and improve the appearance of major entry points into a borough or town.

Both Eagle Scout projects were approved. More information on the projects will be presented at future meetings.

In other business, council approved payment Application No. 5 to Allgyer Enterprise, LLC, and authorized the closeout of the associated project. Final payment approvals and project closeouts are typically completed after borough officials and engineers determine contracted work has been substantially completed according to specifications.

Council also approved a request to send Kyle Hausman and Mark Rothrock to a commercial driver’s license certification program. CDL certification is often required for public works employees who operate large municipal vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks, snowplows and other heavy-duty vehicles used in road maintenance and winter operations.

Following the completion of business, council adjourned the meeting.

Alburtis Borough Council is next scheduled to meet 7 p.m. June 10 at borough hall, 260 Franklin St., Alburtis.
