Emmaus junior Chris Stone took second place last week at the District 11 Class 3A singles tennis championships, held at Freedom High School.

Stone, the 2024 district champ, was seeded second in the event and won his first match last Monday, April 20, against Stroudsburg’s Mason Ulmer, 6-0, 6-0. Stone beat No. 7 seed Erik Peterson (Liberty) 6-4, 6-2 in last Monday’s quarterfinal.

In Thursday’s semifinals, which were postponed from Wednesday because of weather, Stone took down No. 3 seed Vansh Singhal (Nazareth), 7-5, 6-4.

Stone, a junior, met defending district champ Derek Yao in the title match and fell 6-1, 6-3 to the Parkland junior.

The Hornets’ Cole Stuchko also competed in districts last week. The EHS senior was unseeded for the event and fell to No. 5 seed Aarush Makwanna (Easton) 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Two Hornet pairs will compete in this week’s district doubles championships. Stone and teammate Caleb Brown are seeded third for the event, while Stuchko and Sai Uppiretla are unseeded with a first-round matchup against top-seeded Manav Patel and Jacky Zhang of Parkland.

The Hornets have also qualified for the District 11 team tournament and will compete in that as the No. 3 seed next week with a first-round matchup against Stroudsburg (12-5). Emmaus has not faced the Mountaineers this season.
