Nimeh wins two sprints against Thorpe
The Salisbury boys and girls track and field teams dropped last week’s Colonial League meet against Jim Thorpe. The Falcon boys team suffered a 103-46 defeat last Tuesday, while the girls ended up on the losing end of a 96-54 final score.
Jim Thorpe won 13 of the 18 events on the boys side, led by Joshua Louk’s victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Gavin Strohl was the other Jim Thorpe athlete to win multiple events, placing first in the shot put and discus.
Salisbury had multiple-event winners in Thomas Pojanowski (800- and 1600-meter runs) and Steven Lozada (long jump and pole vault). The Salisbury 3200-meter relay team also won.
The girls side was led by Salisbury’s Isabella Nimeh, who won both the 100- and 200-meter dash events. Izabella Gonzalez (100-meter hurdles), Emma Yakaitis (300-meter hurdles), Annalise Shelly (long jump), Makayla Mercado (triple jump) and the 400-meter relay team all picked up wins as well.
Jim Thorpe, which won 10 events, had two athletes win multiple events: Logan Gillespie (1600- and 3200-meter runs) and Vanessa Sadler (discus and shot put).
Salisbury also competed in the Blue Mountain Invitational on Friday, where history was made once again. Lozada improved on his recently set school record in the pole vault by jumping 15 feet in the event last week. He jumped 44 feet, 10 inches in the high jump and placed first in both events.
Salisbury also had a number of top-five finishers. On the boys side, Lozada placed second in the long jump with a mark of 21-7, while Jamanni Crus placed third and fifth in the 100- (11.20 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.89) events, respectively.
Shelly was the top finisher on the girls side with a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 16-8, while Yakaitis placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.07 seconds.
Results from Tuesday’s meet against Wilson were not available at time of press. Salisbury will close the regular season with the 22nd Annual Hoka Henderson Invitational on Friday before the Colonial League Championship Meet is set for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
