Hornets top Parkland, 10-8

The Emmaus girls lacrosse team closed out its final week of the regular season with a victory in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference finale, while dropping two nonconference games.

The Hornets began the week with a 10-9 defeat in overtime at Saucon Valley last Tuesday, April 28, but followed that with a 10-8 victory against Parkland on Thursday. Emmaus concluded the regular season by falling to Crestwood 13-12 Monday.

In the game with the Panthers, Rylie Poll led the attack with five goals, while both Avery Aquino and Taylor Younker tallied two goals and an assist to round out the scoring. Abbey Thomas collected a team-best two ground balls and Aquino won four draw controls. Kate Rainford finished with three saves in net.

In the win over the Trojans, the Hornets used a strong third quarter to distance themselves from Parkland, taking a 4-4 game at halftime into an 8-5 advantage after three, outscoring them 4-1. There were seven different goal scorers led by a four-point effort from Younker (two goals, two assists). Aquino recorded two goals and an assist and Sarah Gross had two goals. Kathryn Newhard notched one goal and one assist and each of Ally Kusko, Poll and Sarah Palazzo found the back of the net once. Rainford made four saves.

Against Crestwood, Poll finished with a team-high five goals and added an assist. Gross netted a hat trick and Aquino tallied two goals and two assists. Kusko and Paige McClain both contributed a goal. Younker added two assists and Newhard had one. Madison Lenig won a team-best six draw controls.

Emmaus finished the regular season at 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Hornets earned the three seed in the EPC playoffs and will take on the number two seed, Nazareth, Thursday evening at Northampton High School’s Al Erdosy Stadium.
